The call came in on Saturday night. A Jewish man in Corsicana, TX, Lester Rappaport, had passed away. He had no family, and was to be cremated. The local Dallas Chevra Kadisha had to work fast to intervene so that he would be able to receive a proper Jewish burial. They were successful, but needed to quickly find a minyan. Six TTI high school students, Yitzi Drebin, Shaya Katz, Yosef Yachnes, Avichayil Yachnes, Moshe Teigman and Shlomo Tanny, gave up their Sunday afternoon to make the trip to Corsicana, and ensure that a minyan was present for Mr. Rappaport’s funeral. Yehi Zichro Baruch.
Founding TTI president, Ivan Sacks, has been a very sought after stock broker for many years, earning a reputation in investment knowledge that has allowed him to manage millions of dollars for his happy clients. On Sunday, December 2nd, over 25 TTI students joined Ivan for our first-ever investing seminar. Ivan taught the students about the basics of investment research, and shared his analytical approach to finding solid investments. The students came away with the desire to learn more, and the second session will be in the near future.
For the 3rd consecutive year, TTI’s Bais Medrash students spent shabbos with DATA of Plano, during the weekend of December 1st. TTI students joined for davening, leading services and helping to inspire DATA’s congregants. The students joined different community members’ homes for shabbos meals. On Friday night, there was an oneg at the Home of Joey and Tzipora Benami, where singing and ruach filled the house, and the camaraderie was felt by all who attended. Rabbi Yaacov Cohen, who joined the TTI students with his family for shabbos, spoke at Shalosh Seudos, and commented that this year – our third year doing the shabbaton – represents a chazakah of working together towards our shared goal of spreading Torah and Yiddishkeit in North Texas.
This year marks 10 years of Texas Torah Institute’s impact on its students and the Dallas Jewish community. Founded in September of 2003 with only 8 students in 1 grade in rented space at Congregation Ohev Shalom, TTI has grown over the last 10 years into a full 7-year high school and Bais Medrash now located on the Haymann Family Campus. TTI has graduated outstanding alumni and created many community programs. We look forward to a year of celebration as we reach this historic year in Texas Torah Institute’s history.
